Arundhati Roy's debut novel sheds light on various aspects of life in Kerala, exposing issues like the caste system, Keralite Syrian Christian culture, and communism. The God of Small Things which won the Man Booker Prize in 1997.
Summary of God of Small Things
The novel portrays the life of a dysfunctional family living in Ayemenem, Kerala, India the home town of Arundhati Roy. The two major characters of the novel is Esthappen and Rahel. Esthappen and Rahel understand the unpleasant truths of life at a young age, as they are tormented and blamed for every disaster. Unexpected circumstances plague their less-than-perfect life. Though the novel begins with Esthappen and Rahel, the majority of the plot focuses around the political events that shape the state, as well as their parents and relatives.As secrets, hatred, and lies destroy their world, the darker overtones of twins' lives become more apparent.
